News Robots Are Trying to Compete with Human Journalists

ai news generator

A new breed of news producer has emerged thanks to the rapid growth of internet. These robots produce hundreds each day of content and can compete with Reuters and the other news media in quick-twitch financial journalism. Robot reporters are being created by The Associated Press to cover business news. Washington Post robots also cover minor league baseball, high school football, and other sports. They are also capable of covering earthquakes. The news robots not only cover breaking stories but also help Bloomberg and The Washington Post keep up with their competition.

They can ruin a story

Robotics are becoming more popular in newsrooms. Automated reports are more accurate and timely. For breaking business stories, the Associated Press employs an algorithm. One human journalist could write 300 stories in one week. News robots could write up to 4,400 stories per day. The Los Angeles Times used robotic journalism to cover the story about an earthquake that occurred in California last March. It beat all other news outlets in the process.

They can produce hundreds upon hundreds of pieces of content within a week

AI is becoming a more prominent part of the journalism industry. Wordsmith is a content creation service that the AP has invested in. These services can be offered by Narrative Sciences and Automated Informations. A Los Angeles Times journalist recently created a news report using custom software after a massive earthquake. Their system generates thousands of articles every day, and can generate as many as 2000 articles per second.

They can help journalists to shift their attention from field work, interviews, and analyses.

Although robots can't replace human reporters in the newsroom yet, it is becoming more common for them to be used. Google News Service, an online news aggregation site, can determine the credibility score of the sources and choose the lead story and related links. A product manager stated that "no human editor could match the speed and accuracy of robot editors."

FAQ

Is AI the only technology that is capable of competing with it?

Yes, but not yet. Many technologies have been developed to solve specific problems. None of these technologies can match the speed and accuracy of AI.

AI is useful for what?

Artificial intelligence (computer science) is the study of artificial behavior. It can be used in practical applications such a robotics, natural languages processing, game-playing, and other areas of computer science.

AI is also referred to as machine learning, which is the study of how machines learn without explicitly programmed rules.

Two main reasons AI is used are:

  1. To make our lives easier.
  2. To do things better than we could ever do ourselves.

Self-driving car is an example of this. AI is able to take care of driving the car for us.

Who created AI?

Alan Turing

Turing was first born in 1912. His father was a priest and his mother was an RN. He excelled in mathematics at school but was depressed when he was rejected by Cambridge University. He began playing chess, and won many tournaments. After World War II, he was employed at Bletchley Park in Britain, where he cracked German codes.

He died in 1954.

John McCarthy

McCarthy was born 1928. He studied maths at Princeton University before joining MIT. There he developed the LISP programming language. He had already created the foundations for modern AI by 1957.

He died in 2011.
